Health: Itafos Foundation Partners with Telecoms Giant MTN to Treat Hundreds of Bissau-Guineans

The Itafos Foundation last weekend concluded its successful collaboration with the nonprofit arm of Africa’s largest cell phone carrier to provide a ground-breaking medical treatment program to citizens in Farim and the wider region.

Working with non-governmental medical organization AMEV and assisted logistically by the Itafos Farim workforce, the contracted medical team of twelve doctors and their auxiliary staff specialized in pediatrics, internal medicine, gynecology/obstetrics and general surgery. In total, the Itafos and MTN Foundations facilitated the treatment of 781 people, of whom 366 were in Farim and 415 came from the wider Oio Region. The medical team treated patients for a broad range of illnesses ranging from routine diseases to 29 emergencies that required referral to the National Hospital in Bissau. In identifying illnesses and prescribing treatment to those who wouldn’t otherwise have access to a doctor, the project has undoubtedly saved lives.

According to the report published by the AMEV team following the project, 55% of the patients treated were female and 45% were male. Of the 781 persons treated, 218 were children.

The partnership with the MTN Foundation was formed as part of that organization’s annual 21 Days of Service initiative, which takes place throughout its markets in Africa and further afield. The Itafos and MTN Foundations have endeavored to build on this successful partnership to introduce further benevolent initiatives in 2019.
