Itafos Foundation Announces 2019 Program of Activities
The Itafos Foundation, a nonprofit vehicle of the Farim Phosphate Project in Guinea-Bissau, has this week finalized its initial program of activities for 2019, centered on communities in the Farim area.
The eight initiatives being introduced at the beginning of the new year are curated by leading professionals and aim to deliver high-impact, cost-effective benefits to the community that can be sustained and built upon over time. All projects were designed in consultation with local working groups. They include:
- Sewing/garment-making courses and donation of sewing machines to women’s associations across the Farim area
- Weekly community youth seminars on hygiene, health and personal safety, accompanied by educational videos and a lunch
- Expansion of the Foundation’s highly successful soccer academy, taking place every weekend in Farim for young people irrespective of gender or religion
- Expansion of the Foundation’s ongoing program of elementary school renovations, including building new school furniture from sustainable local materials, and addition of latrines
- Renovation of the multi-purpose sports ground in Farim town center, including structural repairs and enhancement of safety elements
- Comprehensive program of specially-produced weekly community radio shows on key social issues including health and personal safety, aimed at young people in the local area
- Donation of solar panels for the main avenue in Farim and elementary schools in affected areas
- Improvements to Farim Hospital and donation of basic medications
Further information on these projects will be disseminated through a national media campaign across Guinea-Bissau in January 2019, along with a press conference involving Foundation board members. The Foundation envisages adding to this portfolio of activities after the recruitment of a new project supervisor in early 2019, increasing the Foundation’s current capacity to deliver high quality projects to communities across the Farim area and nationally in Guinea-Bissau.
