GB Minerals SARL, the operator of the Farim Phosphate Project in northern Guinea-Bissau, has been rebranded Itafos Farim SARL following the merger of GB Minerals with Itafos, a major shareholder of the company.
The change was formally unveiled in Bissau last month, following meetings with representatives of the state, civil society and local communities in the area of the project as well as the company’s employees.
Itafos (TSX.V:IFOS) owns a portfolio of phosphate-based fertilizer assets in the United States, Brazil and Peru, as well as the Farim Project. Its other assets currently produce more than a million tons of phosphate rock per year.
The merger of Itafos’ assets provides the Farim Phosphate Project with better access to financial markets and an enhanced level of technical and operational expertise. The company is expected to begin production in Farim in 2020.
The name change has also been extended to the GB Minerals Foundation, the company’s independently-governed charitable organization, which will be re-named Itafos Foundation. For more than two years, the Itafos Foundation has been engaged in supporting communities in the Farim area including school renovations, provision of school meals to children, a major donation of life-saving medications and a popular youth football training program.
